Fienberg Fisher Elementary: About the School

The Reclamation Project Returns to Fienberg Fisher
Owing to the participation of Kathleen Cattie, a middle school science and math teacher, the Reclamation Project has successfully begun a new part of its continuing outreach with Feinberg Fischer this fall of 2008.  Fienberg Fisher, a Title I, K-8 school located in the heart of South Beach, was first acquainted with the Reclamation Project during the 07-08 academic year when Miami Eco-artist Xavier Cortada spoke before students and installed mangrove exhibits in several classrooms.  As a school that is already “green” with campus-wide recycling of materials from plastic and paper to organic compost and mulch, and even the installation of a butterfly garden and an organic vegetable and herb garden, it is not surprising that Kathleen, the driving force behind most of these initiatives, was willing to work with the Reclamation Project for another year.
With the hope of expanding the Project’s presence and positive influence on the students and their community, John Constantinide, Project Coordinator and UM biology graduate student, assigned Konstantine Dietrich, Science Education Intern and UM biology undergraduate student, to work with Fienberg Fisher on various aspects of the Reclamation Project at Fienberg Fisher this fall.  Accordingly, Konstantine has met with Kathleen and her classes several times in the past few weeks to implement core objectives of the Project.
