The Reclamation Project successfully completed its two part restoration effort at Highland Oaks Park. With roughly 200 volunteers over a span of two planting events, the park is now home to approximately 900 native hardwood hammock and freshwater plants.
Highland Oaks Park contains one of the last remaining freshwater wetlands historically located at the headwaters of the Oleta River - a designated "Florida Outstanding Waterway," and the only remaining natural river in Miami-Dade County. This freshwater habitat restoration project will substantially benefit native flora and fauna and create additional habitat for both fish and aquatic wildlife.
Oleta River is an important part of the ecology and history of South Florida. Used regularly by Tequesta Indians and early settlers in Miami, it serves as the only fresh water tributary to Biscayne Bay that has not been altered by flood control systems, meaning it flows naturally and unimpeded from source to sea. As a restored habitat, Highland Oaks will provide the low salinity environment necessary for commercial and recreational fisheries and a critical nesting and foraging area for native birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals.
